The outcome of the BUILDING THE DESIGN winter term design studio 2012/2013 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna run by Angelika Schnell and Eva Sommeregger is shown at the »Wunderkammer« exhibition at Vienna’s University of Technology – the exhibition is on display for four consecutive days, 1^st till 4^th April 2014, including the »long night of science« – 4^th April, where scientific work is presented to the wider public all night long at various locations throughout Austria. Jury members such as Valie Export and Elisabeth von Samsonow were responsible for the »Wunderkammer«’s selection.

For the studio iconic conceptual design drawings / visuals from architects of the 20^th and 21^st centuries (Kasimir Malevich, Theo van Doesburg, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Frederick Kiesler, Alison and Peter Smithson, Superstudio, Aldo Rossi, Peter Eisenman, Rem Koolhaas, Neil Spiller, Lebbeus Woods) were given. Students chose a single drawing in order to first precisely examine it and then reproduce it.

The variety of works ranging from painting and model making to 3d animation and performance are shown at the »Wunderkammer« exhibition.The studio’s successful outcome underlines the main hypothesis of Design Paradigm: the close interdependency of reproducing and designing.

In contrast to theories that maintain the dichotomy of theory and practice, here we believe that pure reproduction depends on a given visual discourse or regime, and that this reproduction simultaneously means redesigning or even manipulating the given material and content. Our contribution to this group show aims at laying bare exactly those mechanisms: the architectural drawing as design catalyst.
